Since 1999, the 2nd & 7 Foundation’s Role Model Reading Program has become one of the most impactful literacy initiatives in the State of Ohio and continues to grow across the country. What started with three Ohio State Football players reading to 2nd graders at just seven schools, has grown into a nationwide effort spanning 200 communities across 26 states, with over 1.2 million books donated to children along the way. Today, student-athletes from all levels of competition visit elementary schools each week to read Hog Mollie books alongside 2nd graders, serving as positive role models who can inspire the need and love for reading.
In the 2025-26 year alone, 2nd & 7’s impact has reached a remarkable scale. Across 137 active programs in 19 states, they distributed 67,298 books and their programs reached 35,015 students. More than 5,405 student-athletes from 1,482 participating teams volunteered their time to visit classrooms and read to these 2nd graders. 17 new programs were also launched this year into schools. These numbers don't just speak to the foundation's impact, but they also reflect the thousands of student-athletes who devote their time week after week, to be a positive role model for kids in need.
For me, I was introduced to the Role Model Reading Program my freshman year of college. Now, going into my senior year, reading for this program has become one of my favorite things to go and do weekly. I love that I can help make a difference in my community by promoting literacy and becoming a role model that these kids can look up to. Truly every single 2nd grader these student-athletes read to is impacted by this program, and they are forever motivated to continue their education and reading journey. Reading to these kids also inspires student-athletes every single day to want to help their community. It is such a special program, and I cannot wait to see how they continue to grow and inspire millions of 2nd graders.
For others, like Shelly Bertsch, The District Library Media Coordinator for Rossford Schools in Ohio feels it's just as impactful, she said:
“One of the most memorable aspects of this program is seeing how much the student-athletes benefit alongside the second graders. After each visit, it’s incredible to watch the athletes light up as they share stories about the students and classrooms they read with. Many of them even received handwritten thank-you cards from the students in their groups, which made a lasting impact. The second graders eagerly look forward to receiving their books and spending time with the student-athletes, hearing about their experiences and connections to reading. This program creates such a meaningful sense of community and connection for everyone involved. Another memorable moment was when Makenzi, one of our 2nd & 7 readers, came running into the media center to share that she had received the 2nd & 7 scholarship. Watching her excitement and pride in that moment was incredibly special. As a student who has worked hard and overcome socioeconomic challenges, it was truly rewarding to see her recognized for her dedication and achievements.”
Caitlin Quillen, The Associate Director of Engagement and Community Outreach at the University of Wisconsin, adds:
“In the back of one of the Hog Mollies titles, it encourages elementary students to think about what they are grateful for. One second grader said, "I am grateful you took the time to read with me today." Multiple student-athletes repeatedly came to visits, displaying their love for the program and a dedication to impacting the lives of those around them. One student athlete said, "Getting to read with local elementary students and see their excitement with the book was really rewarding. It was a great reminder of the impact we can have in our community through small acts of service.”
27 Years, 26 states, 1.2 million books. The program has grown, but the message remains the same: Every kid deserves a role model and the opportunity to grow as a reader, and the 2025-26 year has proved that.
