I have worked with 2nd and 7 as an intern through Cristo Rey Columbus High School’s Professional Work Study Program that aims to equip students with valuable work experience through internship placements at real local nonprofit organizations and businesses. I was originally placed with 2nd & 7 during my sophomore year and enjoyed it very much. From the diverse responsibilities that allowed my skills to shine, to learning more about my own preferences in a work environment, 2nd & 7 was such a perfect match for me that I decided to return for my junior year.
This year was no different: I have again been able to experience what it’s like to work in an authentic, welcoming office environment, while being able to complete a variety of tasks that contribute to 2nd & 7’s mission of eliminating childhood illiteracy. Over the last 2 years of my internship, I have learned a lot about myself and about the importance of supporting literacy in our youth. Through experiences like seeing the impact that giving books to kids can have and feeling the excitement in classrooms receiving free reading material, I have not only learned about the importance of organizations like 2nd & 7, but really felt it firsthand: it is something that can only be understood by being there and seeing it yourself.
These experiences have impassioned me to pursue a career in education so I can apply what I’ve learned here in my future. I want to focus on supporting youth in our community who need it most by helping provide the resources and encouragement they need to flourish. While I’m still developing my plans after high school and college, my internship with 2nd & 7 has helped me learn more about myself, my goals, and the kind of impact I have on my community.
