Throughout the past eight months of my unpaid internship with 2nd & 7 through Cristo Rey’s Professional Work Study Program, I have grown as a student worker both personally and professionally. I am grateful for my job placement this year and I think it is a perfect fit for me. I look forward to workdays and I anticipate new assignments and challenges every day.
One of the biggest areas of growth for me has been confidence. This is a skill I have struggled with for most of my life. In a friendly and welcoming work environment such as 2nd & 7 I think I have improved substantially in the realm of self-assertiveness and others, such as initiative and communication. The hospitable setting of the office makes me feel very comfortable and more willing to ask questions or engage in conversation when I am sitting in on meetings and things like that.
My day-to-day responsibilities are diverse and engaging. Ranging from data entry and basic office work, such as sorting and counting books or using the printer, to creative tasks like crafting, decorating, and writing blog posts or project summaries, I have a broad variety of work, and no two days are exactly the same. One of my favorite parts of this internship has been helping in the book bank by stickering books and then being able to visit schools to distribute them to elementary students. Those experiences helped me connect deeply with the mission of 2nd & 7 and made the work feel meaningful and rewarding.
This internship has given me valuable real-world experience in a professional setting. I have only positive things to say regarding my job placement this school year, and I feel very lucky about it and honestly feel like it is a perfect fit for me. My personal hobbies and interests, as well as academic skills are able to shine through many of the things I’m assigned, and I am also able to practice personal growth. I love my job lots!!!
